Contract Heat Treatment

With a 25,000-square-foot heat treating facility, Overton Chicago Gear provides unrivaled capacity and capability to heat treat gears up to 90 inches in diameter. Our pit furnaces include three state-of-the-art carburizing systems that employ the latest technology, along with an 84-inch quench press—one of the largest in North America.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

To ensure the highest quality, we continuously monitor all process variables with advanced process controllers, which are capable of process simulations and adjustments. All process results are verified and accurately documented in our modern state-of-the-art metallurgical laboratory. Each furnace undergoes monthly calibration and annual testing for temperature uniformity.

Carburizing Furnace Systems

Our furnaces utilize the latest U.S. and European technologies for processing. Each furnace is fully programmable and is capable of real-time case depth and carbon profiling during each cycle. To ensure accurate atmosphere control shims are processed and analyzed throughout the cycle. Carburizing work zones up to 80 inches in dimeter and 100 inches in length with up to five controlled heating zones producing temperature uniformity of +/-25°F.

Quenching Systems

We press quench thin section gears to increase performance and reliability. Subsequent machining is reduced, improving reliability and cycle times.

Overton Chicago Gear has one of the largest press-quenching machine in operation in North America. It is capable of processing external gears up to 80 inches with an overall length of inches and internal gears up to 50 inches in diameter with an overall length of 14 inches.

Overton Chicago gear also utilizes an open quench tank, which support direct quenching up to 80 inches in dimeter and 100 inches deep. The temperature controlled quench tank contains up to 25,000 gallons of quench oil with four variable speed impellers, which provide the best quenching in the industry.
